Steven Holl's MIT dorm
|
This summer I had chance to visit east coast and saw quite a few good architecture, which include Steven Holl's dorm at MIT. He gave a lecture at west coast early this year and mentioned about this project. But then I didn't quite convinced by his start point. He mentioned how Frank Gary works with these organic forms with very expansive software and construction, and how he is able to do it too, but with much simpler structure, just metal studs. Personally I don’t like Gary’s work, to me he seems obsessed with this sculptural forms and pay no attention to the space inside. I also feel tired with similar stuff after saw it in Seattle, Chicago, LA, the Las Vegas and NY. Can you believe it, same thing throw everywhere? Any way, the idea behind this design is "Sponge", the squared building break up with holes in it, which become common spaces, kitchens, dining rooms, TV room, libraries. I have to say, when I saw it in person, it did impressed me. The spaces are quite interesting, a lot of surprises, and it make the building very interesting, different levels well connected. People there seems quite enjoy the place.
